A different way to see the sea

A navigation chart used by islanders in the South Pacific for anvigation made of sticks and shells.
This is a chart used by islanders in the south pacific for navigation. It is part of a fascinating exhibit at the Auckland Maritime museum.

If I recall correctly, the shells stood for islands and the orientation of the sticks helped them know the way that waves tended to roll.
