One-to-three is a monthly photo processing challenge on my other web site, theSquirrelChase.com. I’d love to have you join in: The challenge is simple: take one photo and get creative with it by processing it three different ways. Then share the results, with a link in the comments to this month’s post. I’ll do a start up post on the first of each month, including a round up of entries from the preceding month, so we can all share in the creativity and fun.

This photo is an out of camera jpg (Nikon L120 camera) from a safari at Masai Mara in 2012.

I started by doing some basic enhancement in the GIMP. I used the Levels tool in the Colors panel to adjust exposure, including contrast. I also used highpass sharpening, this post: High pass filter sharpening in the GIMP.

For the first picture I used the Nik collection’s Analog Effects Pro (I use version 2, which is quite old). This picture uses a preset in the black and white group, black and white #7. Nik collection also has a black and white tool set called Silver Effects, which is wonderful. I was just feeling adventurous and had never even opened analog effects before. It seems to be tools to make your photos look more like they were taken with a film camera.

In the second version I applied G’mic’s Brushify filter in the Artistic group.

For the third, I used another G’mic Filter, the Sharp Abstract, also in the Artistic group.

Challenge Background

Since having to isolate due to the pandemic, last spring, I’ve been doing a lot of experimentation with photo processing and I thought it might be fun to share some of the things I’ve discovered and see what others are doing.

I’m hosting the challenge on the other site to try and keep my WordPress.org skills alive.
