Early morning waves and rocks in black and white

Early morning waves on Sandy Beach on Oahu
A big splash

Sandy Beach on Oahu really is sandy, but toward one end it has these interesting lava rocks. Watching the waves crash on the rocks is rather hypnotic. Even though the sunrise colors were very lovely I think black and white brings out the drama of the water.

For Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Rocks, Boulders, Stones, Lens-Artists Challenge: Water, and Brashley Photography’s Mid-week Monochrome.

I used a combination of the black and white tools built into the GIMP and Nik Collections Silver Effects Pro to create the images above.

Layers of light

This week I spent some time relearning and, hopefully, moving a bit forward in understanding how to use luminosity masks.

I used some photos from Hawaii. It allowed me to immerse myself in warm sunny memories during the dark cloudy days as the winter solstice approaches. It’s almost here: in two weeks the days will start to be noticeably brighter.

Here are a few before/after.

Sunrise-sunset quickly go the days-a vacation sampler

I just put together a calendar of photos from our recent trip to give Dad for Christmas, and thought I’d share a sampler. You can see a larger view by clicking on any image in the gallery.

Wishing you warmth this holiday season.

Waves and rocks in black and white

I associate Hawaii with color. But I took several photos during the blue hour and they aren’t exceptionally colorful, so I tried a few of them out in black and white.

For Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Matching Things (it’s a stretch, but they are waves hitting the same lava rocks with the same clouds in the sky.)

All photos were taken with my Sony RX10iv. I use Raw Therapee to do the basic adjustments then load the resulting .tif files into the GIMP. I used Nik Silver effects to convert to black and white, then did some touch up and added a vignette using the GIMP.

Whatsoever is lovely…day 30

After sunset the clouds caught some colors.
After sunset: Residual sunset colors in the clouds.

Even though I posted a sunset yesterday, a sunset seemed like a good way to end this month’s project. But maybe this one with clouds just after sunset is even better. Somewhere in the shadows in the water is the turtle I’ve been watching this afternoon. Just knowing that it is there makes this photo even more lovely for me.

Gan Xingfu (chasing happiness) 赶兴福

This November I am chasing happiness by photographing and sharing one lovely thing I see each day. I do edit the photos, often with an artistic effect like the one above, because playing with a lovely thing makes me happy.

Note: My son checked with his co-workers and, while they haven’t heard the phrase gan xingfu, they thought it was just fine to use.

For more explanation about this project check out this post: Whatsoever is lovely…day 1.

This is posted for Nanopoblano.

It’s almost too much lovely after such a dismal month at home. Warm weather, sunshine and a beautiful sunset.
